28 Days Later Is Getting A 4K Blu-ray–Even Though It Wasn’t Built For It
Danny Boyle’s acclaimed zombie-apocalypse film 28 Days Later is being re-released as a limited-edition 4K steelbook Blu-ray, marking a significant milestone for the film’s preservation and restoration.
The film was originally shot using handheld Canon digital camcorders for on-location filming in central London. This filming technique, while allowing the crew to capture scenes efficiently in low-light conditions, resulted in footage being recorded to MiniDV cassettes at relatively low resolution. This technical limitation had long made a 4K re-release seem impossible, given the inherent low-resolution nature of the source material. However, the announcement confirms that restoration work has successfully overcome this challenge.
The 4K steelbook edition will be a limited-edition release, arriving on September 1. Pricing details have not yet been announced, and preorders are not currently available, though they are expected to launch ahead of the release date.
The re-release represents both a technical achievement in restoration and preservation efforts for a film widely regarded as one of the best entries in the zombie-apocalypse genre.
