How Dave the Diver’s dev built a better Fortnite

Mintrocket’s 2023 breakout hit Dave the Diver is a chaotic blend of genres that combines fishing sims, management gameplay, and mini-games with an absurdist narrative. The game’s unique fusion of mechanics and surreal surprises have made it not only highly engaging but also conducive to sustained content expansion.

According to CEO and game director Jaeho Hwang, Mintrocket is deliberately emulating a live-service model inspired by Fortnite, though adapted to the game’s distinctive identity. Since launch, the studio has regularly collaborated with external creators to introduce new characters and challenges into Dave the Diver’s offbeat universe.

Hwang’s philosophy leverages the game’s ocean setting as a structural advantage for organic content integration. He noted that the ocean serves as an “open space that anyone can visit,” making unexpected appearances feel natural rather than forced. Similarly, the game’s central restaurant provides a narrative justification for why various characters might suddenly appear, mirroring how battle royales and live-service games handle crossovers and guest appearances.

This approach reveals how indie developers can compete with larger publishers in maintaining long-term player engagement. Rather than treating genre-blending and absurdity as liabilities, Mintrocket has weaponized these elements to create a flexible framework for content updates. By positioning the game as a platform where “anything can happen,” the developer has built a system that naturally accommodates collaborations, limited-time events, and surprise character drops without breaking narrative coherence.

The strategy suggests that successful live-service games need not follow the traditional battle royale formula—instead, they can adopt the underlying principles of accessibility and surprise to suit their unique settings and design philosophies.
