Supercell boss Ilkka Paananen’s BAFTA Fellowship is ‘for the entire mobile games industry’
Ilkka Paananen, chief executive of mobile games studio Supercell, has been awarded a Fellowship at the BAFTA Games Awards, recognising his contributions to the gaming industry as a studio leader, investor, mentor, and philanthropist.
David Gardner, managing partner at London Venture Partners, presented the award and highlighted Supercell’s significant role in redefining what mobile games can achieve. Paananen began his career in the games industry at age 22 and assumed his first CEO role initially by necessity—someone simply needed to take on the position. Despite Supercell’s substantial growth and 15-year history as one of the industry’s most successful mobile publishers, Paananen maintains a notably hands-on leadership approach, personally meeting every new employee joining the company.
Beyond his direct work at Supercell, Paananen is actively involved as an investor and mentor to gaming founders. He also leads the We Foundation, a philanthropic organisation dedicated to improving the lives of young people through various charitable initiatives.
