Fallout: New Vegas dev says don’t expect a remaster, argues Bethesda doesn’t have the source code or ’the engineering knowhow'

Chris Avellone, writer and former creative officer at Obsidian Entertainment, has stated that fans should not expect a remaster of Fallout: New Vegas, citing significant technical barriers. According to Avellone, Bethesda—which published the original game and owns the Fallout franchise—lacks both the source code for New Vegas and the engineering expertise required to undertake such a project.

This assertion is particularly notable given that Bethesda has experience with remasters, having previously released an Oblivion-style remaster. However, the specific circumstances surrounding New Vegas, including the passage of time since the game’s 2010 release and Obsidian’s role as original developer, have apparently created obstacles that Bethesda cannot readily overcome.

The statement raises broader concerns about game preservation in the industry and the challenges of updating legacy titles for modern systems. Without access to source code or the technical knowledge necessary to work with the aging engine, a professional remaster appears unlikely in the foreseeable future, disappointing fans who hoped to see the acclaimed RPG restored for contemporary hardware and audiences.
