RuneScape initiates emergency patch rollback for the most ironic reason possible: Giving players so many runes it would cause ‘irreparable economic damage’

Jagex, the developer behind the long-running MMORPG RuneScape, was forced to perform an emergency rollback of the game, reverting all player progression to the state immediately before the latest update. The critical bug inadvertently granted players trillions of runes—the core in-game currency—which threatened to cause catastrophic economic damage to the game world.

The irony of the situation was not lost on the community: a game fundamentally centered around runes suffered from an uncontrolled influx of them into the economy. Jagex determined that the bug’s impact was irreversible through normal economic balancing measures, making a complete rollback the only viable solution. The decision affected all players regardless of whether they had exploited the bug, as the oversupply would have destabilized the carefully balanced monetary system.

In live-service games like RuneScape, currency inflation has long-lasting negative effects, devaluing player wealth and undermining the economic incentives that drive endgame content and progression. Emergency rollbacks are extreme measures typically reserved for ecosystem-threatening scenarios. While the rollback resolved the immediate crisis, it cost players several hours of progress, underscoring the challenges developers face in maintaining complex live-service games where a single bug can necessitate reverting the entire player base’s advancement.
