Super Mario Bros. And Galaxy Movies Combine For $2 Billion At The Box Office

Nintendo’s return to theatrical filmmaking has become a major commercial success. The recently released Super Mario Galaxy Movie has earned approximately $747-750 million worldwide, while the 2023 Super Mario Bros. Movie generated $1.36 billion, combining for over $2 billion in global box office revenue. This marks a dramatic turnaround from Nintendo’s previous film venture—the critically panned 1993 Super Mario Bros. Movie, which flopped at the box office and kept the company away from cinema for three decades.

The Galaxy Movie continues to demonstrate strong performance, holding the top position at the US box office for a third consecutive week with $35 million earned over the latest weekend. The film has grossed $355.2 million domestically and $392.2 million from overseas markets.

Beyond the headline box office figures, the films have generated additional value for Nintendo. The theatrical releases have driven increased sales of Mario video games, demonstrating synergistic benefits between the film marketing and the core gaming business. With a Japan theatrical release scheduled for the near future, the Galaxy Movie is positioned to push these financial totals even higher, potentially reinforcing Nintendo’s commitment to expanding its film industry presence.
