Bethesda doesn’t have ‘the engineering know-how’ to remaster Fallout New Vegas, former Obsidian CCO says
Chris Avellone, former co-founder of Obsidian Entertainment and chief creative officer during Fallout: New Vegas’ development, has claimed that Bethesda lacks the technical expertise to remaster the game. Speaking to YouTube channel TKs-Mantis, Avellone stated that he doesn’t believe Bethesda possesses “the engineering know-how” to undertake such a project.
The core issue, according to Avellone, is Bethesda’s apparent lack of access to New Vegas’ original source code. Without the source material, he suggests the publisher would have “no idea how to reassemble it” and would be unable to effectively remaster the game from scratch. This highlights potential technical and logistical barriers that could prevent such a project from being feasible, regardless of available resources or publisher intent.
Avellone’s comments emerge amid ongoing community interest in a potential New Vegas remaster. His remarks underscore the technical challenges associated with game preservation and restoration, particularly when original development materials are unavailable. The situation reflects broader industry concerns about maintaining legacy games and the complications that arise when source code and documentation are lost or inaccessible.
