Framework’s new dev kit means you can jam a full desktop GPU into the back of its 16-inch laptop

Framework has introduced the OCuLink Dev Kit, a new external graphics solution for the Framework Laptop 16 that allows users to connect full desktop graphics cards to the rear of the device. The announcement was made at Framework’s Next-Gen event and represents an expansion of the company’s modular design philosophy, complementing its existing ability to upgrade internal GPU modules in three minutes.

The OCuLink Dev Kit enables connections to desktop-grade graphics cards, network cards, and other PCIe expansion cards via eight lanes of PCI-Express bandwidth—delivering far more processing power than typical laptop systems. The solution fulfills a promise Framework made in August and is positioned for power users seeking high-performance graphics capabilities beyond what standard laptops offer.

However, the device requires the laptop to be powered down before users can connect or disconnect external hardware. This limitation reflects the accessory’s targeted audience of advanced users rather than casual consumers. The OCuLink Dev Kit exemplifies Framework’s commitment to expandability, enabling users to augment their systems with components traditionally reserved for desktop PCs, effectively transforming the portable Framework 16 into a more powerful desktop alternative.
