LoL Patch 26.9 Preview: On-hit Statikk Shiv is Coming

Riot Games has previewed League of Legends Patch 26.9, featuring a reworked Statikk Shiv item with on-hit lightning damage mechanics. The redesign introduces significant balance complications that Riot’s design director Matt Phroxzon has publicly acknowledged may be unsustainable long-term. The on-hit effect creates problematic interactions across champions—Braum can trigger his passive on multiple targets from a single auto-attack, while Senna gains excessive stacks.

Despite recognizing these issues, Riot is releasing the item anyway. Phroxzon stated that “pushing the frontier of innovation also carries some risk, so we want to see where it goes,” indicating Riot’s willingness to test potentially problematic changes in their live service environment to gather real-world data on balance and gameplay impact.

Riot has made adjustments to Statikk Shiv to address some concerns, including modifications to how the on-hit lightning interacts with primary targets, though full details remain unclear from the preview. This approach reflects Riot’s philosophy of iterating on experimental mechanics through live play rather than adopting overly conservative design—betting that community feedback and gameplay metrics will reveal the appropriate balance adjustments needed.
