Amazon’s Mass Effect TV team wasn’t actually ordered to rewrite scripts and make them “more appealing to non-gamers”

The upcoming Mass Effect TV show, currently in development at Amazon Prime Video, has become the subject of a clarification regarding its creative direction. Earlier this month, The Ankler reported that Peter Friedlander, Amazon’s new head of global TV, had requested that the show’s scripts be rewritten to make them “more appealing to non-gamers.” However, Daniel Casey, the show’s writer and executive producer, has denied the accuracy of this report.

Responding to a follower’s question on Bluesky about the rewrite claims, Casey stated that he was caught off guard by the article just as much as the public was. He emphasized that he has no knowledge of the “non-gaming audiences” quote mentioned in the report and doesn’t know who made that statement. Most importantly, Casey clarified that no one involved in the show’s production has asked him to make changes specifically to appeal to non-gaming audiences.

While Casey is bound by non-disclosure agreements and cannot discuss the specifics of the show’s scripts or production details, he felt compelled to address what he characterized as inaccurate reporting. His denial suggests that the original report may have been based on speculation, unnamed sources, or misunderstandings about Amazon’s editorial process for the project. The clarification comes shortly after Amazon’s new leadership initiated a script review process for all in-development projects, which appears to have been mischaracterized in the original article.
