New horror game Penguin Colony sees you face supernatural threats as a flightless bird

Origame Digital, the developer behind critically acclaimed Umurangi Generation, has announced Penguin Colony, a new Lovecraftian narrative horror game with an unconventional premise: players control members of a penguin colony as they face supernatural and eldritch threats beneath Antarctic ice.

The game inverts the typical horror protagonist archetype by placing players in the perspective of flightless birds navigating unsteady wobbling gaits while encountering cosmic horrors. Rather than relying on combat prowess or human intelligence, the narrative experience emphasizes the vulnerability and unique limitations of penguin characters.

The project is being published by Fellow Traveller Games, an Australian independent publisher known for distributing acclaimed titles including Citizen Sleeper and 1000x Resist. This partnership pairs the creative vision of Origame Digital with a publisher that has established itself as a curator of distinctive narrative-driven indie games.

Gameplay mechanics appear to emphasize the distinct abilities of individual penguins within the colony, allowing for varied approaches to exploration and survival. The game’s Lovecraftian framework suggests themes of cosmic dread and existential horror presented through the unusual lens of wildlife protagonists facing incomprehensible supernatural forces.
