Scrapped The Super Mario Bros. Movie Ending Revealed

Newly discovered storyboards from the development of The Super Mario Bros. Movie have revealed an earlier, more ambitious version of the Peach and Bowser wedding sequence that was planned to feature numerous additional cameos from the Mario franchise.

According to the storyboards, the wedding scene would have included several visiting dignitaries and characters that did not make it into the final 2023 film. Among the cut characters were Whomp King, Wart, Mouser, and Birdo—a significant roster of classic Nintendo characters that were ultimately excluded from the theatrical release.

Interestingly, some of the scrapped cameos were not abandoned entirely. Wart, Mouser, and Birdo—a trio of characters from the original Super Mario Bros. 2—eventually appeared in this year’s The Super Mario Galaxy Movie instead, suggesting that while they didn’t fit the original film’s vision, the characters were preserved for use in the broader Mario cinematic universe.

The discovery of these storyboards provides insight into the creative decisions made during the film’s production, showing how Nintendo and the filmmakers refined the wedding sequence to reach its final form. The decision to trim the guest list suggests the filmmakers may have been managing pacing, visual clarity, or narrative focus in that particular sequence, opting for a more streamlined celebration rather than an exhaustive parade of franchise cameos.
