12 years after the original and with its themes more relevant than ever, anti-war game This War of Mine is getting a full remake
11 Bit Studios has announced a full remake of This War of Mine, the acclaimed indie anti-war game originally released 12 years ago. The studio revealed the project as part of its 2025 financial summary, emphasizing that the game’s civilian-focused perspective on conflict and its anti-war themes remain particularly relevant in today’s global landscape.
Alongside the This War of Mine remake, 11 Bit Studios is also developing a new entry in the Frostpunk franchise, with both projects representing the studio’s strategy to revisit its most important intellectual properties with “a new, refreshed formula.” The studio has additionally confirmed two entirely new, unannounced projects are in development, though details remain undisclosed.
The timing of the This War of Mine remake is notable given renewed attention to conflict and humanitarian themes in contemporary discourse. The original game distinguished itself by offering players the perspective of civilians trying to survive during wartime, departing from the military-focused narrative typical of most war-themed games. A modernized remake could expand on these themes while introducing enhanced mechanics and visuals for current audiences.
