The Last Of Us Star Troy Baker Wants To Start His Own Game Studio, But He Won’t Rush It

Troy Baker, one of the gaming industry’s most prolific and recognizable voice actors, has announced plans to establish his own game studio. Known for voicing iconic characters including Joel in The Last of Us, Sam Drake in Uncharted, Indiana Jones in Indiana Jones and The Great Circle, and Ocelot in Metal Gear Solid, Baker is now looking to transition from performance to game development.

In recent interviews, Baker expressed his ambitions to create original games and “tell my own stories.” He envisions building a studio with a trusted team of collaborators, stating: “I want to build a team. I am excited about building a studio with people that I’ve worked with, that I trust, and going, ‘Here’s my idea. How can you make it better?’”

Baker cited voice actor Abubakar Salim—who created the Afro-futurist action game Tales of Kenzera: Zau after voicing characters in Assassin’s Creed Origins—as inspiration for his venture. He has drawn lessons from industry veterans including Neil Druckmann, Hideo Kojima, Ken Levine, Todd Howard, and Vince Zampella. Baker plans to apply principles from these acclaimed studios and titles to create new gaming experiences.

Importantly, Baker emphasized he is not rushing the process. He is currently in the early stages, having begun “conversations” about forming the studio. Rather than hastily jumping into development, he intends to carefully assemble his team and develop his creative vision. This move reflects a growing trend of industry veterans leveraging their expertise to venture into game creation and storytelling.
