A Surprising 17-Years-Later Sequel Is Coming West This Year
Aion 2, the long-awaited sequel to the original 2008 MMORPG Aion, is set for a global release later in 2026. Developer and publisher NCSoft announced that the free-to-play game will launch simultaneously across North America, South America, Japan, and Europe via Steam, marking a significant expansion following its initial regional launch.
The game launched in South Korea and Taiwan in November 2025 to mixed reception, with particular criticism directed at its monetisation system and microtransactions. NCSoft acknowledged the concerns and committed to adjusting the monetisation approach ahead of the Western release, signalling a willingness to address player feedback.
Aion 2 continues the franchise’s legacy as an MMORPG, with its narrative set 200 years after the original game. The sequel represents a significant milestone for the franchise, arriving nearly two decades after Aion’s initial 2008 launch.
The decision to proceed with global expansion despite launch controversies suggests NCSoft’s confidence in the game’s Western market potential. The Steam release provides substantial visibility and accessibility on one of the largest PC gaming platforms, while the multi-region server structure demonstrates a commitment to supporting a globally distributed player base.
The global rollout represents a major investment by NCSoft in the competitive MMORPG space. Whether Aion 2 can overcome its monetisation perception issues and establish itself among established genre competitors will become apparent following its 2026 launch.
