Adding naval warfare in time for Crusader Kings 3’s Silk and Silver expansion would have blown Paradox’s “schedule out of [the] water”

Paradox Interactive has confirmed that naval warfare will not be included in Crusader Kings 3’s upcoming Silk and Silver expansion, a major DLC focused on merchant republics. The developer explained that implementing naval combat would have required timeline changes they couldn’t accommodate.

In a deep dive into the expansion, Paradox stated they want to ensure naval warfare receives proper attention and doesn’t feel hastily integrated into content that already carries significant implementation challenges. The studio noted that the Silk and Silver DLC already contains “a fair amount of risk” in its scope, making the addition of complex naval systems incompatible with their planned development schedule.

Silk and Silver is scheduled for release towards the end of 2026 and serves as the second of two major add-ons announced as part of Crusader Kings 3’s fifth chapter roadmap. The expansion will deliver new mechanics and content centered on merchant republics, continuing the medieval strategy game’s evolution. While naval warfare is being set aside for now, Paradox’s commitment to proper implementation suggests it may arrive in a future update once resources and scheduling allow for more thorough development.
