Dark Souls 2 Modders Are Beta Testing Path Tracing

Dark Souls 2 is receiving modern graphics enhancements thanks to community modders. The Dark Souls Lighting Engine project has released a public beta version of a path tracing mod for the classic action RPG, allowing PC players to experience advanced lighting technology in a game that hasn’t received official updates since its enhanced re-release.

FromSoftware’s Dark Souls 2 launched over a decade ago on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, with an enhanced edition later arriving on PS4, Xbox One, and PC. However, since that re-release, the game has remained static, unable to take advantage of modern graphics technologies available on contemporary hardware.

The community-developed path tracing mod addresses this gap by implementing ray-traced lighting, which more accurately simulates how light behaves in real-world environments. According to the Dark Souls Lighting Engine team, the modification also reduces visible texture tiling, a common artifact in older games that impacts visual quality.

Interested players can currently access the beta version through the Dark Souls Lighting Engine’s Discord server before the mod is officially uploaded to Nexus Mods, the primary platform for distributing community modifications on PC. This represents another example of how dedicated modders extend the lifespan and relevance of older games, keeping them visually competitive with recent releases through technological innovation.
