Metro author confirms Metro 2039’s protagonist main character is voiced, unlike Artyom and a first for the series — and “he’s got things to say”
4A Games has confirmed that Metro 2039’s protagonist, known as “The Stranger,” will be a fully voiced character—marking a significant departure from series tradition and a first for the Metro franchise.
In previous Metro games, the main character Artyom remained largely silent, with players experiencing the story primarily through environmental storytelling and interactions with other characters. The shift to a voiced protagonist represents a notable change in narrative approach for the franchise.
According to Metro author confirmations, The Stranger’s voice acting will give the character a greater presence in the narrative. As noted in announcements, “he’s got things to say,” indicating the protagonist will actively participate in dialogue and storytelling throughout the game.
Metro 2039 is set to be the next mainline entry in the long-running first-person shooter franchise, continuing the story after the events of Metro Exodus. The game returns the action to Moscow’s metro tunnel system, the iconic setting that serves as the series’ namesake.
The franchise, known for its single-player, story-driven approach to first-person shooter gameplay, has built its reputation on immersive narrative experiences set in post-apocalyptic Moscow. The decision to introduce a voiced protagonist suggests 4A Games is aiming to deepen character development and player engagement in the next installment.
