Shigeru Miyamoto wants Peach’s backstory in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie to remain canon in future Nintendo games
Following the recent release of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, a significant revelation about Princess Peach’s background will carry over into Nintendo’s future games. The animated film reveals that Peach and Rosalina are actually sisters who were separated during childhood—a finding that had been theorized by longtime fans since the original Super Mario Galaxy released nearly two decades ago, though it remained unconfirmed until the film’s release.
In interviews with Japanese media outlet Nintendo Dream ahead of the film’s Japanese release on April 24, franchise creator Shigeru Miyamoto confirmed that Peach’s newly-revealed family origin will be considered canon in future games. According to Miyamoto, he intends to have future Mario titles “adhere as much as possible” to the backstory established in the film, which portrays both Peach and Rosalina as beings born from stardust before their childhood separation.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has proven to be a substantial commercial success, earning nearly $750 million at the global box office and holding the top position in the U.S. market for three consecutive weeks. This performance stands in contrast to the film’s mixed critical reception. When asked about the reviews, Miyamoto expressed surprise at their negativity, describing the critical response as “truly baffling.”
Miyamoto’s statement represents an unusual approach to franchise development: using a theatrical film to establish canonical lore that will subsequently be integrated into the game series. The decision suggests Nintendo’s strategic intent to maintain narrative continuity between its film and video game properties going forward.
