Miyamoto Reacts To Super Mario Galaxy Movie’s Bad Reviews: “It’s Truly Baffling”
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has received notably negative critical reviews despite strong audience approval. The film holds a 43% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes while earning an 89% audience rating—a split that mirrors the 2023 Super Mario Bros. Movie but with lower overall scores.
In response to the critical reception, Nintendo legend Shigeru Miyamoto expressed surprise during an interview with Japanese media. He noted that while he understood criticisms of the original Super Mario Bros. Movie, he expected the sequel to be better received. Instead, critics proved “even harsher” than before, which Miyamoto described as “truly baffling” and “rather odd.”
Miyamoto reflected on Nintendo’s involvement in the film industry: “We stepped in from another medium and did our best to help energize the film industry. And yet the very people who are supposed to champion the film industry are the ones being so negative; it’s truly baffling.”
Critics have cited the film’s heavy reliance on references and an underdeveloped story as primary concerns. The significant disconnect between critical and audience reception suggests the movie resonates with general viewers but falls short for professional film critics.
