Talking Point: Star Fox Zero Is 10 Years Old - Have You Actually Played It?

Star Fox Zero marked its 10th anniversary on its North American launch in 2016. Developed by Nintendo and PlatinumGames, the game was the last mainline Star Fox release to date, bringing the series to HD for the first time on the Wii U.

The game became notable for its divisive control scheme, which challenged players expecting the cinematic rail-shooter experience they anticipated. The unconventional controls, combined with the Wii U’s documented hardware and market difficulties, contributed to disappointing sales upon release.

Alongside Star Fox Zero, Nintendo released Star Fox Guard, a tower defence spin-off exclusive to the eShop. Guard only received a physical release bundled with Zero, causing it to remain largely overshadowed.

The 10th anniversary prompted reflection on the game’s ambitious design choices and its legacy within the Star Fox franchise, which has seen no new mainline entries since.
