German game industry employment drops 3%, marking second year of decline
The German games industry continues to show mixed signals as employment declines for the second consecutive year while company numbers grow. According to data from the German Games Industry Association (Game) released through the recently rebuilt gamesmap.de database, employment fell 3% despite a 4% increase in the total number of game companies—rising from 917 to 956 firms.
The growth in companies suggests new entrants to the market, with development-only studios showing the strongest expansion, increasing 6% to reach 474 studios. Companies operating as both developers and publishers grew more modestly at 3%.
The data, drawn from approximately 1,800 entries covering developers, publishers, and related companies, indicates the German games industry is gradually recovering from recent challenges including international consolidation and funding uncertainties that have pressured the sector. The divergence between company growth and employment decline suggests structural shifts within the industry, potentially reflecting consolidation within existing operations, changes in studio size distribution, or reallocation of resources.
