‘Godzilla World’ Is Japan’s Version of Hollywood’s ‘MonsterVerse’ — and It Sounds Like Godzilla Minus One Is Just the Start
Toho, the Japanese studio behind the legendary Godzilla franchise, has announced plans to develop “Godzilla World,” a shared universe concept for its monster properties similar to the Hollywood MonsterVerse franchise. The announcement comes ahead of the November release of Godzilla Minus Zero.
According to Keiji Ota, who holds the title of Chief Godzilla Officer at Toho, the company is preparing to expand and interconnect its Godzilla universe through multiple interconnected films. This strategy mirrors the approach used by American studios to build the MonsterVerse, which has connected films featuring Godzilla, King Kong, and other giant creatures.
The plan builds on recent success in the Godzilla franchise, including the well-received Shin Godzilla directed by Hideaki Anno in 2016. Toho’s initiative suggests the company sees significant potential in creating a cinematic universe that could span multiple films and stories, allowing for greater creative expansion and cross-franchise storytelling opportunities.
While specific details about future Godzilla World films remain limited, the announcement indicates that Toho is investing in a long-term strategy to make Godzilla a centerpiece of interconnected theatrical releases. The Godzilla World strategy represents a significant shift in how Toho is approaching the franchise, moving from standalone or loosely connected films to a more integrated cinematic universe model.
