GTA: Carcer City, a San Andreas mod which turns Rockstar’s dark snuff game Manhunt into a full-on open world, has a demo out
A new mod for Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is bringing Rockstar’s controversial early 2000s title Manhunt into a fully-featured open-world setting. Called GTA: Carcer City, this total conversion mod faithfully recreates the original Manhunt experience as a Grand Theft Auto-style world, with a playable demo recently released.
The mod reimagines Carcer City, Manhunt’s original setting, as a massive industrial city in ruins. Developers describe it as a city “far from its glory days [as] the Crown Jewel of the Rust Belt,” capturing the decaying urban landscape that defined the original game’s atmosphere. According to one of the modders who discussed the project with Kotaku, the mod recreates all of the original Manhunt’s levels within this new open-world framework.
By combining Manhunt’s dark, visceral gameplay with GTA: San Andreas’s open-world mechanics, GTA: Carcer City offers a complete reimagining of the source material. The release of a playable demo marks a significant milestone for the mod project, allowing players to experience the Rust Belt setting and the mod’s interpretation of Manhunt’s gameplay in an open-world context.
