Capcom fan snatches up Pragmata website domain and fills it with Resident Evil memes
A Russian Pragmata player has purchased the domain name “aweskerproduction.com,” a website referenced in the game’s New York City setting on in-game billboards. The domain was unclaimed when Pragmata launched, allowing the fan to acquire it. The new owner has filled the site with Resident Evil memes and visual gags, prominently featuring Albert Wesker from the survival horror franchise.
This incident highlights Capcom’s practice of referencing real domains in its games without securing them first. Earlier this year, a different fan purchased a domain referenced in Resident Evil: Requiem and used it to host links to their social media and YouTube channel. That domain owner indicated they would return the domain to Capcom if asked, suggesting friendly resolutions are possible.
The practice of embedding unclaimed URLs in video games creates opportunities for fans and opportunists to repurpose them. While the Pragmata domain is now home to harmless gaming memes, the situation underscores a quirk of game development where fictional website references can become real digital property available for purchase by anyone. It raises questions about whether major publishers like Capcom should verify ownership of all referenced domains before including them in released games.
