‘This Change Is Not Surprising At All’ - Industry Analyses Xbox Game Pass Price Drop

Microsoft has announced a price reduction for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate while simultaneously removing Call of Duty from the service’s day-one launch strategy. This marks a significant shift in the company’s approach to its subscription gaming offering.

The decision to reverse the day-one Call of Duty inclusion represents an acknowledgment that the previous strategy had not delivered expected results. Mat Piscatella, analyst at Circana, stated that the change is “not surprising at all,” indicating that industry observers had anticipated this pivot. Data showed early on that including Call of Duty games day one on Game Pass did not generate the anticipated subscriber growth Microsoft had hoped for, making the costly arrangement economically unfavorable.

The price reduction on Game Pass Ultimate comes as Microsoft aims to make the subscription service more competitive and appealing to consumers. By lowering the cost barrier while adjusting content strategy, Microsoft is recalibrating its subscription gaming approach in response to market realities and subscriber behavior.

Industry analysts view this change as a natural course correction rather than a surprise development. The shift suggests that while Game Pass remains central to Microsoft’s gaming strategy, the economics of including premium AAA titles on day one may not be sustainable or as valuable as initially believed.
