Atari acquires emulation studio Implicit Conversions
Atari has announced the acquisition of Implicit Conversions, an emulation studio specializing in bringing classic games to modern consoles. The acquisition includes the studio itself and its proprietary Syrup emulation engine, an advanced technology capable of emulating 8-bit, 16-bit, and 32-bit games for contemporary hardware.
Implicit Conversions has ported over 100 classic titles to modern systems including PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and Xbox Series X|S. Notable titles from their catalog include Mortal Kombat Trilogy, Rayman, and Fear Effect. The studio has been collaborating with Atari over the past year through preservation firm Digital Eclipse on projects such as Mortal Kombat: Legacy Collection and other unannounced titles.
The studio’s co-founders, Bill Litshauer and Robin Lavallée, have transitioned into new roles at Atari following the acquisition. Implicit Conversions is particularly recognized for providing many of the classic games available on PS Plus Premium’s retro collection.
This acquisition strengthens Atari’s position as a major player in game preservation and the retro gaming market. The company now owns multiple emulation and preservation-focused studios, including Digital Eclipse and Nightdive, consolidating its leadership in bringing legacy games to modern audiences.
