Final Fantasy 14 Is Coming To Switch 2, But With An Annoying Caveat
Square Enix announced that Final Fantasy XIV will launch on Nintendo Switch 2 in August 2026, marking a significant expansion of the critically acclaimed MMORPG to Nintendo’s new hardware. The announcement was made by FFXIV director Naoki Yoshida and Square Enix CEO Takashi Kiryu at the April 2026 Final Fantasy XIV Fan Fest keynote in Anaheim.
The port comes with a notable caveat regarding subscriptions. While Final Fantasy XIV currently operates under a unified subscription model that allows players to access the game on multiple platforms (PS5, PS4, Xbox, and PC) with a single subscription, the Switch 2 version will require a separate subscription. According to Kiryu, this change was mandated by Nintendo following months of discussion between the two companies about how the platform holder’s requirements would affect the game’s business model.
To offset some of the additional costs for players, Square Enix negotiated concessions with Nintendo. Specifically, playing Final Fantasy XIV on Switch 2 will not require a separate Nintendo Switch Online subscription, which would add another layer of expense for players. Additionally, the game will include a one-month free trial period for early access, allowing players to test the servers and experience the game before committing to a subscription.
The Switch 2 launch represents a long-sought goal for FFXIV’s producer Yoshida, who has repeatedly expressed interest in bringing the game to Nintendo platforms. The expansion continues FFXIV’s pattern of growing reach across multiple gaming ecosystems while maintaining its status as one of the most successful MMORPGs.
