Inside Housemarque’s improved narrative process for Saros

Finnish developer Housemarque has undertaken a significant evolution in its game development approach following its 2021 acquisition by Sony Interactive Entertainment. The studio, originally known for science fiction-themed top-down “bullet hell” games, has dramatically expanded the scope and ambition of its projects with a particular focus on strengthening narrative capabilities.

Saros, Housemarque’s latest title in collaboration with PlayStation, exemplifies this shift. The third-person action game features an extensive “dark sci-fi” story, marking a departure from the studio’s traditionally gameplay-first design philosophy. While Housemarque maintains its core identity as a gameplay-focused developer, it has intentionally added more narrative depth to its games since joining PlayStation’s portfolio.

Developing robust storytelling at a gameplay-first studio required deliberate strategic investment. Housemarque brought in specific narrative talent and established collaborative relationships with other PlayStation teams to elevate its storytelling capabilities. This cross-studio partnership leveraged PlayStation’s broader creative resources and expertise in narrative-driven game design.

The studio’s evolution was already evident with 2022’s Returnal, which demonstrated Housemarque’s commitment to integrating compelling story with signature action gameplay. Saros continues and refines this trajectory, emphasizing improved pacing, production quality, and well-prepared performance work—suggesting the studio has substantially matured its ability to blend action-first game design with meaningful narrative content.
