Slay the Spire 2 Patch Notes Address Base Game Difficulty and the Doormaker

Mega Crit has released a new balance patch (0.104.0) for Slay the Spire 2, its roguelike deckbuilder sequel, addressing feedback that the base game difficulty has been too challenging for some players. The developer announced the update via Steam, emphasizing its commitment to making the game “more accessible for a wide range of players.”

The patch focuses primarily on rebalancing the game’s baseline difficulty, particularly with respect to Ascensions—the game’s difficulty modifiers. Mega Crit stated it wants to ensure that the base experience feels more balanced while still preserving challenge at the highest Ascension levels, which the studio intends to remain achievable only for a fraction of dedicated players.

In addition to difficulty adjustments, the developer is also reconsidering changes to the Doormaker, a boss encounter that punishes players by exhausting (removing) cards played during certain turns. The studio acknowledged that this mechanic could feel overly harsh and expressed interest in ensuring “its mechanics aren’t too abrasive.”

The patch is part of ongoing refinement work as Slay the Spire 2 remains in beta. Beyond balance changes, the update includes typical maintenance items such as bug fixes, new art assets, and writing tweaks. Mega Crit’s willingness to iterate on difficulty and boss mechanics reflects the studio’s approach to early access development, actively soliciting and responding to player feedback to improve the overall experience.
