A Single-Player Final Fantasy 14 Could Happen If It Weren’t For One Big Problem, Director Yoshida Says

At Final Fantasy XIV’s North American Fan Festival in Anaheim, game director Naoki Yoshida announced that the MMORPG’s next expansion is titled Evercold and will launch in January 2027. The expansion marks the beginning of a new story arc called the Godless Realms Saga and represents the game’s sixth major expansion.

Evercold brings significant updates to the game, including two new playable classes and a major battle system overhaul. The expansion introduces two new combat modes: Reborn Mode, which builds on the current combat system and job mechanics, and Evolved Mode, which offers greater emphasis on individual job identity and distinctions.

According to Yoshida, the expansion title nearly had a different name, as the original title was rejected by Square Enix during development. In the game’s narrative, players’ Warrior of Light will attempt to stop the Fourth Reflection from freezing over Eorzea as part of the new story arc.

Beyond the expansion announcement, Square Enix confirmed that Final Fantasy XIV Online will launch on Nintendo Switch 2 later in 2026. The MMO will also receive additional content updates and crossovers, including a collaboration with Neon Genesis Evangelion, alongside a new Alliance Raid coming with patch 8.0.

The announcements underscore Square Enix’s continued investment in Final Fantasy XIV, expanding both its story content and platform availability while modernizing its gameplay systems to emphasize class diversity and player identity.
