Final Fantasy 14 is coming to Nintendo Switch 2 in August – but there’s a catch
Final Fantasy 14 is coming to Nintendo Switch 2 in August 2026, Square Enix announced during the Final Fantasy 14 Fan Fest 2026. Director and producer Naoki “Yoshi-P” Yoshida and Square Enix CEO Takashi Kiryu revealed the news while showcasing gameplay of the MMORPG running on the new Nintendo hardware.
However, the Switch 2 version comes with a notable caveat regarding subscriptions. Unlike players on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox consoles who pay for the game once and then a monthly subscription with cross-platform access, Switch 2 players will need to maintain a separate subscription specifically for the Switch 2 edition. This means Switch 2 owners will require their own dedicated monthly subscription on top of any existing Final Fantasy 14 subscription they may have on other platforms, effectively creating a platform-specific paywall.
According to the information revealed, Switch 2 players do not appear to need to purchase the base game itself, only maintaining the monthly subscription. This contrasts with other platforms where players must buy the game and then pay the recurring subscription fee. The exact pricing and whether existing players will receive any compensation or benefits for the additional Switch 2 subscription requirement has not been fully detailed in these announcements.
The August 2026 release window places Final Fantasy 14 among the early major third-party titles confirmed for Nintendo Switch 2, demonstrating strong publisher confidence in the new console and its potential audience for an established MMORPG.
