Sega Launches Sega Universe to Revive Classic Franchises

Sega has launched “Sega Universe,” a new initiative designed to revitalize its classic gaming franchises. Announced on April 24 with the tagline “No Old, Stay Gold,” the program aims to bring new life to beloved properties while expanding their reach beyond traditional video games.

The initial phase of Sega Universe focuses on anniversary projects celebrating classic titles marking milestones in 2026. Featured franchises include OutRun, Streets of Rage, NiGHTS into Dreams, Guardian Heroes, Sakura Wars, Fantasy Zone, Segagaga, Rent A Hero, and Dynamite Deka.

The initiative represents Sega’s strategy to transcend the gaming medium entirely. As described in the company’s official announcement, the project aims to deliver “new ways to enjoy” these classic properties through entertainment content and other media expansions. This broadening of scope suggests potential ventures into merchandise, themed entertainment, and other commercial opportunities beyond video game releases.

While the announcement highlights these beloved franchises, it’s important to note that the initiative doesn’t necessarily guarantee new games in these series. The “Sega Universe” brand could focus on merchandise, celebrations, and multimedia experiences rather than new game development. The exact nature of projects for each franchise remains to be seen as Sega rolls out its anniversary celebrations throughout 2026.
