Xbox boss says she wants to ‘make the right decision’ on future game exclusivity

Xbox leadership has outlined plans to reconsider the company’s approach to game exclusivity, following an internal staff letter signaling a strategic reevaluation. New gaming CEO Asha Sharma and chief content officer Matt Booty addressed the shift in comments discussing broad policy commitments.

Since 2024, Xbox has increasingly released first-party titles on PlayStation 5, a move driven by Xbox Series X/S hardware sales significantly lagging behind PlayStation’s console sales. Rather than maintain exclusive content as a competitive advantage, Microsoft has opted to expand its game availability across rival platforms to reach broader audiences and support revenue through software sales.

However, the current approach has lacked consistency. Some first-party games launch simultaneously across Xbox and PS5, while others arrive on PlayStation months after their Xbox release. This inconsistency suggests the company is working toward a more clearly defined policy regarding multi-platform releases versus timed exclusives.

The executive comments indicate Xbox is focused on making decisions that best serve the business long-term rather than adhering to traditional exclusivity models. As console hardware competition intensifies and install base differences persist, Microsoft’s strategy emphasizes software distribution across platforms as a primary revenue driver.
