Atari Acquires Studio Focused on PS1 Emulation

Atari has acquired Implicit Conversion, a specialized studio focused on emulating classic games from the 32-bit era, particularly those originally developed for the original Sony PlayStation console. The acquisition converts an existing working relationship into a permanent partnership under the Atari corporate structure.

Implicit Conversion had been collaborating with Atari through Digital Eclipse on several high-profile preservation and remastering projects. These collaborations included Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection and Rayman, with additional titles expected to be announced throughout 2026. The partnership has proven successful enough that Atari decided to bring the studio in-house to further develop its retro gaming strategy.

Bill Litshauer of Implicit Conversions expressed enthusiasm about the acquisition, characterizing the relationship as discovering their “long-lost cousins”—suggesting strong creative and professional alignment between the teams. The acquisition is expected to expand Atari’s ability to bring classic games to modern consoles, leveraging Implicit Conversion’s specialized expertise in emulation technology and preservation methodologies.

This move reflects the broader gaming industry’s growing emphasis on game preservation and the monetization of legacy content. By securing a dedicated team with expertise in 32-bit era emulation, Atari strengthens its position to revive and remaster its extensive back catalog for contemporary gaming platforms.
