Wonder Man Started as an Elaborate ‘Joke Pitch’ at Marvel Before it Found Success on Disney+

Director Destin Daniel Cretton revealed that Wonder Man, now one of the most successful Marvel Cinematic Universe shows on Disney+, originated as a “joke pitch” that wasn’t initially intended to become a real project. Speaking at a Deadline Contenders TV panel, Cretton explained how he helped sell the concept despite its humorous origins. The idea was inspired by Cretton’s affection for the character Trevor Slattery, a terrorist-turned-actor portrayed by Ben Kingsley in previous Marvel films. Since its initial pitch, Wonder Man has evolved into a significant production, with Cretton serving as director, writer, and executive producer. His involvement builds on his previous work in the MCU, including directing Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The show’s unexpected journey from informal pitch to successful Disney+ series demonstrates how creative ideas can develop into major productions, even when they begin as lighthearted concepts.
