Disney Reimagined and Animated Songs From Frozen 2, Moana 2, and Encanto in American Sign Language for National Deaf History Month
Disney has launched a new initiative to celebrate National Deaf History Month by releasing American Sign Language (ASL) adaptations of three beloved animated songs on Disney+. The project, titled “Disney Animation’s Songs in Sign Language,” features reimagined and animated versions of “The Next Right Thing” from Frozen 2, “Beyond” from Moana 2, and “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” from Encanto.
The project was directed by Disney animator and director Hyrum Osmond, whose personal connection to the Deaf community directly inspired the initiative. According to Osmond, the concept originated from his father, who is Deaf. His father has long been supportive of Osmond’s animation career and regularly watched Disney films using subtitles. This personal experience motivated the creation of the accessibility project.
Rather than providing static sign language interpretations, Disney Animation chose to fully animate these ASL versions, creating a dynamic visual experience that honors both the artistry of the original songs and the expressive nature of sign language. This approach ensures that Deaf and hard-of-hearing audiences can experience the emotional impact and artistry of these songs in their natural language.
The project demonstrates Disney’s commitment to inclusive content creation. By centering the perspective of someone with lived experience in the Deaf community, Disney Animation has authentically served its audience while celebrating an important cultural heritage month.
