Following game’s cancellation, The Last of Us multiplayer director vows he’s “never going to let what I work on not see the light of day again”
Vinit Agarwal, former game director of Naughty Dog’s cancelled The Last of Us Online, has publicly responded to the project’s cancellation by vowing to never let future work go unreleased.
Naughty Dog cancelled The Last of Us Online in December 2023, announcing that the multiplayer game would have required the studio to dedicate substantially all of its resources to post-launch content and support for several years. This resource commitment would have severely limited the studio’s ability to develop future single-player experiences, including the recently announced Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.
In recent comments on social media, Agarwal reflected on the cancelled project’s legacy. He noted that former Naughty Dog colleagues continue to reach out to express how “amazing” the game was going to be, with many describing it as “the best multiplayer game they’ve ever played.” The comments suggest the project had garnered significant internal support and confidence among the development team before its cancellation.
Agarwal’s response carries emotional weight, explicitly vowing: “Never going to let what I work on not see the light of day again.” The statement reflects the frustration inherent in game development when substantial creative investment yields a cancelled product that never reaches players.
The cancellation exemplifies ongoing industry tension between live-service game development—which demands continuous post-launch support and resources—and single-player game development. Naughty Dog’s decision prioritized its established expertise in narrative-driven single-player experiences, representing a strategic choice about creative direction and resource allocation.
