Magic: The Gathering Arena devs are unionizing to deliver genAI and layoff protections

Developers behind Magic: The Gathering Arena at Wizards of the Coast have launched a significant unionization effort under the Communications Workers of America (CWA), marking the first known labor organizing effort at the studio. A supermajority of the development team, comprising more than 100 workers across engineering, design, art, and production roles, have signed union authorization cards and are actively seeking voluntary recognition from parent company Hasbro.

The proposed union, operating under the banner United Wizards of the Coast—CWA, aims to secure meaningful protections regarding the use of generative AI technology and safeguards against future layoffs. In their public announcement, the developers stressed that unionization would benefit all workers and lead to improved working conditions at the studio. Beyond their request for voluntary recognition, the union has also filed for a formal election with the National Labor Relations Board, establishing a legal framework that gives Hasbro the option to either voluntarily recognize the union or face a formal vote.

This unionization effort reflects growing industry-wide concerns about the impact of artificial intelligence on game development employment and the precarious nature of job security in a sector that has experienced significant layoffs in recent years. The timing is notable given ongoing discussions in the gaming industry about how generative AI tools will be integrated into game development workflows and how worker protections should evolve alongside technological advancement.
