Pokémon Champions producer Masaaki Hoshino says the game has to deal with more “limitations” when it comes to graphics

Masaaki Hoshino, a technical director at The Pokémon Company and veteran of the franchise dating back to Pokémon Yellow, has acknowledged ongoing fan criticism regarding Pokémon Champions’ visual presentation. Since its recent launch, the game has faced significant fan scrutiny over its graphics quality, along with concerns about its limited feature set and small Pokédex roster.

In an interview with Eurogamer Germany, Hoshino directly addressed the controversy, expressing understanding of the community’s concerns. He noted that as a longtime Pokémon fan himself, he “can totally relate to all” of the discussions taking place within the fanbase about the game’s visual limitations.

Hoshino brings extensive experience to his role, having contributed to numerous Pokémon titles throughout his career. Beyond his foundational work on Pokémon Yellow, he has served as producer on the fighting game spinoff Pokkén Tournament, the MOBA title Pokémon Unite, and most recently Champions. This background positions him as one of the most experienced figures within The Pokémon Company’s development hierarchy.

The acknowledgment of “limitations” when it comes to graphics represents a notable statement from a senior technical figure, suggesting that the game’s visual presentation may face inherent constraints. The candid response indicates The Pokémon Company’s awareness of fan feedback and its acknowledgment that technical trade-offs were made during development.
