Xbox boss: Memory crisis could impact next-gen hardware availability and pricing

Xbox CEO Asha Sharma has acknowledged that ongoing memory chip shortages will significantly impact the pricing and availability of Project Helix, the company’s next-generation console. During an interview with Game File, Sharma confirmed that component supply constraints are a critical factor in the company’s hardware planning.

The memory crisis is primarily driven by massive investment in artificial intelligence data center infrastructure, which has created unprecedented demand for memory chips and constrained supply for consumer electronics. Sharma stated that “memory costs will impact pricing, will impact availability” for Project Helix, though she did not provide specific details about launch timelines or exact pricing implications.

Project Helix, unveiled last month, represents Microsoft’s next-generation gaming hardware developed in partnership with AMD. The console is designed to deliver high-performance capabilities and advanced rendering and simulation features for an enhanced player experience.

While industry observers anticipated supply chain challenges would eventually affect new hardware launches, Sharma’s public acknowledgment underscores the significant impact of the AI infrastructure boom on consumer electronics manufacturing. The company indicated it is accounting for these challenges in its planning and focusing on controllable factors in the development process.
