Resident Evil Requiem Had a ‘Phantom’ Chapter That Capcom Cut
Capcom has revealed that it cut an entire chapter from Resident Evil Requiem during the game’s development cycle. According to Requiem director Koshi Nakanishi, who spoke with Japanese website Denfaminicogamer, the excised content was a “phantom” Chapter 2 that would have appeared early in the game’s progression.
This revelation echoes a similar decision made during the development of Resident Evil 7, which also featured a phantom Chapter 2 that was removed before release. In RE7’s case, the cut chapter involved a sequence where players would transition from the first annex building to the main structure. The undisclosed details suggest that Resident Evil Requiem’s removed chapter served a comparable narrative or structural purpose within the game’s early chapters.
The practice of cutting significant content during development is not uncommon in game production, particularly in lengthy story-driven titles. These “phantom” chapters are typically removed to streamline pacing, reduce development time, or refocus the game’s narrative direction. Nakanishi’s openness about these cuts provides insight into Capcom’s development process and the iterative decisions that shape the final released product.
