Bethesda Reminds Switch 2 Fans Its “Physical Code-In-Box” Editions Of Fallout 4 And Skyrim Are Now Available

Bethesda has released “physical” editions of Fallout 4: Anniversary Edition and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Anniversary Edition for Nintendo Switch 2, though the term “physical” comes with significant caveats.

These releases are distributed as “code-in-box” editions rather than true physical game cards. The packaging features prominent box art but explicitly states that “game card is not included.” Instead, purchasers receive a download code that requires a full game download from the Nintendo eShop to play. The box essentially serves as a display case for collectors, with the actual game existing entirely as a digital product.

The games were initially announced in February as part of Bethesda’s Switch 2 launch lineup, and they are now available for purchase in this code-in-box format. This approach represents a compromise between physical retail distribution and digital delivery—offering store shelves a tangible product while avoiding the costs and complexity of manufacturing actual game cartridges.

For players who already own the eShop versions of these Anniversary Editions, purchasing the physical code-in-box release would be redundant, as they would be activating duplicate licenses. This hybrid release strategy is becoming increasingly common in the gaming industry as publishers balance physical retail presence with the economics of digital distribution.

The code-in-box format allows Bethesda to maintain a retail presence for two of its most popular franchises on Nintendo’s newest platform without the expense of producing physical cartridges, while still providing collectors with physical packaging to display on their shelves.
