Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth gets a surprise demo today, complete with progression carry-over on Xbox, Switch 2 and PC

Square Enix has released a surprise free demo for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth on Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox Series X/S, launching April 28, 2026. The demo includes the game’s first two chapters, covering Cloud’s Nibelheim flashback and the party’s regrouping in the town of Kalm following their escape from Midgar, offering several hours of gameplay across combat, exploration, and side content. Any progress made during the demo will carry over when the full game launches on June 3, 2026, bringing Nintendo and Xbox owners to parity with PlayStation 5 owners who received the game in February 2024.

The demo is substantial, weighing 45GB on Switch 2 and 91GB on Xbox Series X/S, while the full game will require 102.5GB of storage on Switch 2. Players who retain demo save data will receive bonus in-game items—a kupo charm and survival set featuring healing items—in the full release. The second chapter notably includes Queen’s Blood, the collectible card game that was widely praised when the PS5 version launched.

Early hands-on impressions indicate Square Enix has achieved an impressive technical accomplishment with the Switch 2 port, successfully scaling the visually demanding title to the hybrid hardware despite some expected visual compromises compared to the PS5 version. This substantial demo represents a significant commitment to the multiplatform release strategy.
