‘Eventually the slop will just fall to the bottom’: Garry’s Mod sequel launches to ‘mixed’ reviews, but Garry himself isn’t worried about AI games on the main page
S&box, the long-awaited open-source successor to Garry’s Mod, launched today to mixed reviews on Steam. The game aims to provide a creative toolkit similar to Roblox, encouraging user-generated content and community creativity. However, the platform has immediately faced a significant challenge: an influx of low-quality, AI-generated content flooding its storefront.
The negative reviews on S&box’s Steam page predominantly cite concerns about AI-generated “slop” undermining the platform’s quality and user experience. This has prompted rapid response from Facepunch, the developer studio behind S&box. Founder Garry Newman stated that “low quality, obvious AI-created slop is going to be a growing problem in every creative outlet,” and committed to taking action. Facepunch plans to implement measures to “promote human creativity and push obviously AI-created slop off the main page.”
While Newman acknowledges AI’s value as a learning and productivity tool, the studio is positioning itself against using AI purely for game creation without human oversight. The timing is notable, as this 2026 release reflects ongoing industry-wide concerns about AI’s impact on creative communities. In related news, the original Garry’s Mod will receive an update incorporating the fan-made Half-Life remake Black Mesa.
