That rumoured Subway Surfers movie is still in the pipeline, sort of – and so are more spin-off games
Sybo Games is continuing work on a long-rumoured Subway Surfers movie adaptation, though the company is taking a measured approach to the project. CEO Mathias Gredal Nørvig expressed the studio’s commitment to bringing the IP to the big screen while emphasizing it must feel “exactly right” before moving forward, suggesting development has been challenging.
Rather than rushing to announce a film deal, Sybo is focusing on expanding the game franchise itself. The developer launched Subway Surfers City worldwide on February 26 as a sequel to what it claims is the most downloaded game of all time. This new entry represents the company’s continued investment in the core franchise.
Additionally, Sybo has quietly reskinned Paint Brawl, a Splatoon-like multiplayer title in soft launch, to feature Subway Surfers characters. This strategy demonstrates how the studio is leveraging its flagship IP across multiple game formats and genres, creating spin-off experiences that capitalize on the brand’s popularity.
The measured approach to the movie and emphasis on gaming initiatives suggest Sybo is prioritizing quality over rapid expansion into new media. By strengthening the game portfolio first, the company appears to be building additional cultural momentum that could eventually support a film adaptation that truly resonates with the franchise’s dedicated player base.
