In this Steam game, your shameful backlog tries to kill you

Game Quest: The Backlog Battler is a new Steam game that gamifies a running joke among PC gamers—the ever-growing collection of unplayed titles. Developer Nic Taylor has created a title where your own Steam library becomes your primary antagonist.

The game’s core mechanic is both simple and clever: your least-played games appear as hostile enemies that deal damage proportional to their original purchase price. Each game-enemy is represented as a floppy disk-style character with its price prominently displayed on its label, effectively mocking players for their impulse purchases. The cruelest twist: games you’ve never played at all are completely immortal and cannot be defeated.

The design offers some mercy, however. Games you actively play transform into allies that assist in your battle against your shameful backlog. This creates a feedback loop where engagement with your library is directly rewarded through game mechanics.

Game Quest serves as both a humorous commentary on digital gaming culture and a mechanically inventive experience. It capitalizes on a widespread phenomenon—the accumulation of games through sales, bundles, and subscriptions—and transforms that universal pain point into interactive entertainment.
