FFXIV Director Explains Plans to Sunset PS4 Version, Estimated to Last Through Patch 8.3

Final Fantasy XIV Director Naoki Yoshida announced at Fan Fest that the PlayStation 4 version of the long-running MMO will be phased out over the coming years. The next expansion, Evercold, launching in January 2027 alongside Patch 8.0, will continue to support PS4 with full functionality. The game will maintain PS4 support through several post-launch patches, with Yoshida estimating that the platform can be supported “probably up until about Patch 8.3,” expected to arrive in early 2028.

The primary reason for the sunset is technical constraints. According to Yoshida, the growing size of Final Fantasy XIV has become an increasingly difficult hurdle to manage on PS4 hardware. Despite cooperation with Sony’s engineering team, which has enabled continued support up to this point, the expanding scope of the game is reaching the limits of what the aging console can accommodate.

This announcement provides FFXIV players on PS4 with nearly two more years of continued support from the next expansion launch. The phased approach allows the development team to continue optimizing for the platform while gradually shifting focus to newer hardware as console generations evolve.
