GameMaker incorporates Claude Code to enable AI-assisted workflows

GameMaker has unveiled a new runtime (GMRT) designed to support larger development teams and studios with diverse workflows, moving beyond the limitations of a traditional closed integrated development environment. The announcement includes GM-CLI, a command line toolchain compatible with both the new and existing runtimes, enabling developers to work outside the IDE in their preferred environment.

A significant addition to the toolchain is the integration of Claude Code, which empowers developers with AI-assisted workflows. This integration allows teams to leverage AI to automate routine coding tasks—commonly referred to as “vibe coding”—without sacrificing control or leaving their chosen development environment. GameMaker head Russell Kay emphasized the company’s inclusive approach, stating the goal is to “give users who might benefit from AI the option to do so.”

The new runtime and toolchain address multiple developer needs simultaneously. The expanded architecture accommodates larger teams requiring greater flexibility than a traditional IDE provides, while the command line approach increases accessibility for international studios and those with non-English workflows. The Claude Code integration furthers productivity by handling repetitive tasks, freeing developers to focus on creative and complex aspects of game development.

This expansion reflects GameMaker’s strategy to remain competitive in an increasingly AI-augmented development landscape, offering teams the flexibility to adopt AI assistance at their own pace while maintaining accessibility for developers who prefer traditional workflows.
