Heroes of Might & Magic: Olden Era Early Access Impressions: A Worthy Return to Form

Heroes of Might & Magic 3 (1999) remains a genre classic nearly three decades later, establishing a gold standard for strategic empire-building games that has never been surpassed. However, the Heroes of Might & Magic franchise has largely stagnated since the fourth entry, failing to capture the magic of its predecessor despite numerous attempts.

Heroes of Might & Magic: Olden Era, a prequel developed by Unfrozen and published by Hooded Horse and Ubisoft, launched in early access on April 30th and is generating exceptionally positive impressions. Rather than attempting a controversial reimagining or remaster, Olden Era approaches the beloved formula as a fresh take on what made the series great, delivering a turn-based strategic empire-builder with RPG elements that feels contemporary while respecting the original’s legacy.

The early access release includes the first act of a narrative campaign featuring an “impending doom” narrative arc, alongside six distinct factions. The package is comprehensive, featuring both procedurally generated and hand-crafted maps to conquer, a full map editor for custom content creation, and multiplayer support. Early players describe the experience as a “worthy return to form,” suggesting the game successfully captures what made HOMM3 special without feeling like a nostalgic relic.

After more than a decade without a mainline Heroes of Might & Magic sequel—the last being 2015’s HD remaster—Olden Era appears poised to restore the franchise to relevance. The strong critical reception in early access suggests this may finally be the spiritual successor fans have been waiting for since HOMM3’s reign as the undisputed champion of the strategy genre.
